There are four fat doves on the telephone wire outside. And one sparrow - the non-conformist. The doves are all facing north, the sparrow is facing south. There are five wires, but for some reason the second one from the top is the popular wire today.

I know that communities gradually are replacing above-ground wires with underground conduits, for many good reasons: they're safer, for one, and less prone to damage by weather or squirrels. But looking outside my window, I can see at least one advantage of the conventional wires, strung between telephone poles, and I suppose I - as well as the birds - are going to miss them when they're gone.
